THE 411 on THE DANCER UPSTAIRS

As a Latin American nation nears collapse under a highly organized terrorist movement, idealistic policeman Agustin Rejas (Javier Bardem) faces the greatest challenge of his career: to catch the mysterious guerilla leader Ezequiel. The brains behind the bloody revolution that threatens to bring the government and entire country down, Ezequiel is as elusive as Rejas' superiors are corrupt - an irony not lost on Rejas, who left a career as a lawyer to try to find "a more honorable way of practicing the law." The military's response to the brutal tactics of Ezequiel's followers is equally ferocious, creating an atmosphere of mass panic.

It was HELL UP IN HARLEM with Fred Williamson, AMERICAN GRAFFITI for the mainstream and everyone peeped the number one film that year, THE EXORCIST.

And cornrows had yet to become the hairstyle of urban-ballers.

Q) Let's settle the debate right now. Do you think rap stars are getting too many roles in Hollywood films?
YES - If I see Ja Rule in one more film, I'm BOYCOTTING!
NO - "Now I'm in the limelight cuz I rhyme tight." Courtesy of the late great Notorius B.I.G.
DON'T CARE - I dont like Hollywood stuff anyway.

Since the rap game unleashed its power on the film industry, many filmmakers have joined hip-hop's movement. The Squad was thinking, since rap-stars have become movie stars, how about some movie stars and moguls picking up the mic? The Squad took the liberty of initiating these possible lyrical masters with some street-cred names and ideas for their record label.
Current Name MC Name Label Name
Steven Spielberg Da Berg Jaws Records
Brad Pitt Brad Nasty The Pitt Records
Sam Jackson Sam Mack Gator Records
Halle Berry Berrylicious Sista Soul Records
Oprah Winfrey O-Love Sista Maven Records

The Squad lives in cyber-space, but we have to throw a shout-out to the team at WIRED for one of the "hottest" magazine covers ever. Jada Pinkett-Smith riding on an iron horse to bring your attention to THE MATRIX. (In theaters May 15) WIRED on newsstands now.

The Squad observed some time ago the mogul's interest in KING SUCKERMAN, a riveting novel by George P. Pelecanos. In a recent interview with THE SOURCE, the writer observed the book amongst Diddy's personal collection. The Squad wants to know is Diddy bringing this work to life?

Pick up the book, the story will blow you away. So Diddy, what's up? The Squad wants to know.

The Squad knows that filmmakers spend a lot of time listening to music. Various Squad members decided to let you in on what they are bangin in their whips.

SQUAD MAIL - In Response to Hollywood/Health FADE IN, Issue 2 - April 7, 2003

This is Carl Seaton, I appreciate your article regarding ONE WEEK, and JOHN Q pertaining to health in the African American community. I would also like to let you know that ONE WEEK finally did obtain distribution and is now available in video stores nationwide. Keep doing your thing FADE IN!

Carl Seaton, Director - ONE WEEK

Are you forgetting about "Soul Food"? This movie forces the decision to cook the food the way 'Mama' did in order to keep the family together, rather than to remember that this woman had extreme diabetes (and very, very likely, hypertension). A film that doesn't get a great deal of exposure but deals specifically with sickle-cell anemia is "A Warm December" (starring and directed by Sidney Poitier). It was beautifully written, and poignantly directed with extreme sensitivity. The medical condition was the central theme of the movie -there was no escaping it.
