...an
inside look at the style, the stars and the beauty stuff that's
street & sweet
Give razors the ax, Get a wax
Dare to bare skin without shaving nicks and razor bumps. Rid
yourself of razors. Waxing is the way to smooth-to-touch skin
just short of permanent hair removal. While not as expensive
as multi-hundred dollar electrolysis, waxing will set you back
more the usual dollar per Bic. Shaving is cheap and convenient,
but it promotes coarse and rapid hair growth after each application
and the skin becomes more prone to irritations. Waxing provides
the look and feel of hairless skin with longer lasting effects,
at least two weeks. If the pain and price cause you to raise
a bushy eyebrow, one service at Haven in Soho (Manhattan, NY)
will make you an instant devotee. The spa's skilled aestheticians
will transform your "ow" into "wow" in a
matter of minutes. Plus nothing's better than a beauty bargain
- Haven charges just $15 for bikini, $12 for underarms and $19
for lower legs.
Get the max for your wax at www.havensoho.com
Spa with the stars: Eileen Ford, Bobbi Brown, Kirsten Dunst
and Renée Zellweger are frequent Haven visitors.
|
|
 |
 |
 |
| Hit
us up with your thoughts and three lucky winners will
receive a $25 certificate towards a service at Haven with
a bottle of Tend Skin ® The Skin Care Solution ®
for unsightly razor bumps, ingrown hairs and razor burn.

| HAIL
MARA! - By Vern Goff |
Mara
Brock Akil, Creator and Executive Producer for UPN's breakthrough
comedy "GirlFriends," has blazed through Hollywood with
lightning speed and yet her feet are planted firmly on the ground.
Her bountiful and transcendent gifts compose the celestial i.e., razor
sharp intelligence, solid academic achievement, consummate writing
skills, physical beauty, drive and grace. A native of Los Angeles,
California but reared in Kansas City, Missouri, Mara quickly establishes
within the first five minutes of our introduction - that her success,
approach to her work and life's philosophy are all fueled by the oldest
of axioms...hardwork, diligence, networking, and the unbelievable
willingness to start at the bottom - converting the tiniest and seemingly
most trivial work assignments into major career advances.
At its most significance, however, it is Mara's ability to craft characters
with uncanny cultural depth - who although "authentic to her
experiences of African American Life" - are so skillfully drawn
that they attract cross-cultural and cross-generational interest-albeit
with a unique cultural flavor.
Akil's
work takes you for a ride, wildly careening between comedic highs
to confronting you with some of life's most thought provoking and
ultimately transforming situations. This is Art?
in every sense
Yes!..rare art that transports you to places and circumstances,
that while comfortably familiar, nonetheless alters your point of
view
forcing you to delicately balance cultural truths with
fiction.
You
get the happy feeling, when experiencing Mara's work, and interacting
with her personally,... that you know her...that you know her characters
and that she gets that elusive "it." "It" being
the abyss Hollywood continues to serve up as caricatures of Blacks
and Black lifestyles - stereotypical and exploitative. Only Akil, and
a few others, successfully translate-indisputable, unadulterated
and legitimate portrayals
..that allow our community to collectively
exhale. Mara's repertoire of characters are strong and distinct
- gathered from her fertile imagination - and an obviously unfathomable
storehouse of memories of her close knit family, wide circle of
friends and life encounters and observations. All of the above and
more has vaulted Mara to the head of the class - to become one of
the most sought out and valued among the new wave of elite Hollywood
writers and producers. She is truly our Girlfriend.

without having to pay dues and initiation fee for SAG membership.

SORRY,
WE DECIDED TO MOVE IN A DIFFERENT DIRECTION
How many
of you have heard that line before? |
| Last weeks
dismissal of Michael Jordan by Wizards honcho Abe Lincoln...oops,
Abe Pollin, was absolutely terrible in The Squads opinion. Many
people...women, men, blacks, asians, indians, whites, cab drivers,
Kids and the Hot Dog Vendor are peeved by the decision. For
many minorities and women, it served as another reminder that
you can "bring home the groceries" but you can't stay
for dinner. In film, music and sports, minorities are often
shown the glass ceiling or the door before being allowed to
prove their metal. And simply because Jordan is from the sports
world is a moot point. This problem is felt by many women and
minorities at film studios, record labels and law firms where
after you have billed 1,000,000 hours, the partner track is
still marked CALL BACK NEXT YEAR!
WE
WANT TO HEAR FROM YOU.
Please note that voting in our Poll is a private issue and
your vote is a part of the pot. Results are published but
not how you voted. So VOTE!
|
| Q)
Do you think that minorities are OVERWHELMINGLY denied access
to Executive positions? |
|
|
|
Last
weeks Poll Question:
Will AMERICAN IDOL lose credibility if Ruben is voted off
the show?
WOW - 86% Voted that the show WOULD LOSE CREDIBILITY
if Ruben was voted off.
AND - 14% Voted that the show would be fine without Big
Rubes.
Well, Ruben is safe and this week is the big show-down. Tune
in on FOX. |
|
 |
| 8:51pm
- Tuesday, May 7, 2003 - Ruben is SAFE!! |
 |
The Squad
let it be known and so did our Poll Results (See Above) that
the show was in danger of losing its credibility if Ruben were
voted off the show. However, besides the Pee-Wee Herman hip
shakin', Clay can hold his own and Kimberley definitely presents
real competition. Rubes will deliver more smackdowns and he
will be crowned the new American Idol. We love the fact that
Ruben is a big fella. So many big-fellas....D*MN, THE SHOW JUST
RETURNED FROM COMMERCIAL BREAK AND RYAN JUST LAID THE BOOM..."JOSH...YOU
ARE OUT!" Talking about lowering the hammer without delay.
The bottom line is that FOX has one HOT property in American
Idol. The people that make it into the top 50 should be proud
of their accomplishments and it has been a great winter treat
to have them in our living rooms as they each showcased their
great voices. So now KNUCKLE-UP-KNUCKLE UP...The Big Man vs.
The Thin Man vs. Mariah plus 20lbs...IT'S ON! To Joshua Gracin
- The Squad wishes him well and we are sure that Nashville has
a life for him. SEMPER FI JOSH...SEMPER FI! HOOHAH!
